those raindrops keep fallin’ on my head, they keep fallin’

And… cue the rain.

I haven’t even looked outside yet, but I can hear the cars driving down the street and that long-absent sound of water being pushed out from underneath tires.

Thank god I have my foul weather gear for the bike.

As much as I love riding in the rain, it’s a pain in the ass to get the extra layer of clothing on for a five-minute ride to work. It means I have to bring a plastic bag to put my wet clothes in, as well as change out of them underneath the gas tank overhang before I get in my taxi for work. But it’s a small price to pay to be bone dry after riding the 101 to work.

It means that I’ll have to go slower on the way in today, pay more attention and brake sooner because I do not want to die on a motorcycle, especially commuting. No, if I’m gonna go on the bike, I’d rather have it be off of a cliff or into a fruit truck a la Duane Allman somewhere out on a joyride – not on hospital curve on my way to work.

Speaking of work, today is going to be nuts. Dreamforce is the convention put on by local cloud-computing software company Salesforce.com, and is expected to attract as many people (or more) as Oracle OpenWorld did two months ago. While I’ll believe that when I see it, I know that the hotels are full, and Howard Street is blocked off between Third and Fourth and the only other company that does that at the convention center every year is Oracle.

I made a killing during Oracle this year, just like I have every year that I’ve ever worked their convention, and I’m expecting a better than average income this week.

Too bad my legs are still so shot from my walk on Sunday that I got out of bed at noon today, sleeping two hours past my alarm. I’ll still end up rolling in around three, as all I have to do after this blog post is eat breakfast and get to work, but I really wanted to get up early and make yoga and get into work around two.

No, instead I slept through the rain, the sound gently pushing me back into bed every time I woke up, the overcast skies keeping my studio far darker than normal and allowing me to sleep uninterrupted.

I guess I needed the sleep, and seeing as tonight should be nuts, I guess I should be thankful for the rest when I start pounding the wet pavement in short order, dealing with the local convention goers and the out-of-town techie attendees. While the tech industry isn’t my favorite group of people, as far as conventioneers go, you could do worse – they could be alcoholic salesmen of the financial variety or notoriously skimpy doctors.

Regardless, the city has an extra fifty to one hundred thousand people in it today, tomorrow and Thursday, snarling traffic downtown into a standstill.

And it’s raining.

Which means it’s time to go get paid.
